A thin glass plate (bright square) creates a height variation in this layer of Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) solution. Scroll waves in the vicinity of the plates edge drift at constant speeds along the step edge. The drift speed is proportional to logarithm of the solution height ratio. The BZ reaction is an autocatalytic system far from the thermodynamic equilibrium. The waves (bright bands) travel due to the interaction of complex reactions and diffusion. There is no fluid motion in this experiment.
